Massage Therapy & Pathology:
Psychiatric Disorders with Ruth Werner
Thursday, July 26th, 2007 3:00PM
Eastern Standard Time (New York time)
Every year more people
get a massage for the first time; every year massage is
perceived by more people as health care modality rather than
(or in addition to) as an occasional indulgence. The result
is that today massage therapists can expect to see clients
who often struggle with complex health issues. When we work
with clients who are not perfectly healthy, whose bodies may
not have the capacity to keep up with the kinds of changes
some types of bodywork bring about, we run the risk of doing
more harm than good. In this interview Ruth Werner will
discuss some of the most important pathologies you need to
know about for the safety of you and your
client.
At the AMTA convention Ruth will address some of the most
common mental health issues in our culture today. Depression, post
traumatic stress disorder, panic disorder, obsessive-compulsive
disorder, addiction, anorexia, bulimia and will look at how
bodywork and massage can have the most positive
impact.
Ruth Werner is a massage therapist and educator with a
passionate interest in the role of bodywork for people who struggle
with health. Her book, A Massage Therapist’s Guide to
Pathology, is in its 3rd edition, and is used in massage
schools all over the world. She is at work on the 4th edition,
along with several other projects. She writes columns for
Massage Today and Massage and Bodywork Magazine,
and teaches continuing education workshops all over the country.
She is the Education Chair of the Massage Therapy Foundation, and
she serves on committees for the AMTA and the National
Certification Board for Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork. Curently
based in Utah, Ruth was extremely honored to be selected for the
Jerome Perlinski Teacher of the Year Award for 2005. Visit Ruth
