The Massage World Record project is an effort to bring massage therapy education and information to the public and the industry in a one-day event that attempts to set a new Guinness World Record for the most simultaneous Swedish massages. Susan G Komen, Breat Cancer Foundation and the Massage Therapy Foundation will be the beneficiaries by receiving funds raised from attendance fees and donations. 1,500 tables, clients and therapists each, will be the instrument through which the media and the attending general public will be able to witness the incredible influence massage has on a physical and energetic body. They plan to facilitate the 2011 Alternative Healing & Holistic Health Expo (AHHH Expo) where local and national massage therapy and breast cancer-related companies will be available to the public and professionals in the massage therapy industry. Accompanying the main Event will be an 88-piece youth orchestra, with special appearances and presentations by local and industry leaders.  Continuing education and public education courses will surround the event with top-rated experts in the fields of massage, cancer treatment & prevention, and alternative healthcare.

Creative Applications of Research in the Clinical Massage Environment with Whitney Lowe

New clinical techniques and approaches result from combining research findings with clinical experience. In this presentation Whitney will discuss the most recent research behind our current understanding of stretching and myofascial physiology and how using the concepts from these research findings can create a unique treatment approach combining stretching and myofascial treatment techniques. He will talk about measure the effectiveness and then discuss ways this treatment approach could be modified or enhanced with future investigations. 
 
Whitney Lowe has been a massage professional for over 20 years. Professionals and schools use Lowe’s texts, Orthopedic Assessment in Massage Therapy and Orthopedic Massage: Theory and Technique. He is a contributing author to several books and his articles appear regularly in professional journals and magazines. In 1994, he founded the Orthopedic Massage Education & Research Institute (OMERI) to provide massage therapists the advanced education they would need for treating orthopedic soft-tissue disorders. Family Caregiver Use of Massage as Supportive Cancer Care Following Multimedia Instruction with Tracy Walton, LMT, MS

Massage is one of the most effective forms of supportive care in cancer, but access to professional practitioners is limited for most patients. In this interview Tracy will talk about reports findings from an NCI-sponsored randomized controlled trial of family caregivers guided by a home-based multimedia instructional program to use simple techniques of touch and massage as supportive care. The project assessed effects of the intervention on (1) symptoms and side effects, (2) quality of life, and (3) caregiver attitudes toward use of touch in the caregiving relationship at home. Tracy will talk about the curriculum design for caregiver massage and the belief that massage is contraindicated for people with cancer.
